Raja Update 12/16

Dear Sandeep,

Last Monday, Raja's legislation to rename the United States Post Office at 1300 East Northwest Highway in Palatine to honor Bernie Bluestein, a 102-year-old northwest suburban resident and one of the last surviving members of the U.S. Army's famed Ghost Army advanced. "The Ghost Army helped misdirect enemy forces, protect American troops, secure key Allied victories and free Europe from the grip of fascism," said Raja. "Renaming the Palatine Post Office in Mr. Bluestein's honor ensures our community recognizes a hero who embodies the very best of the Greatest Generation, Illinois, and our nation."

On Tuesday, a new poll memo was released showing that Raja now leads the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Illinois. With less than 100 days to go in the primary, Raja leads among men and women, across the ideological spectrum, and both inside and outside of the Chicago media market.

On Wednesday, joined by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, Raja introduced the Tracking and Restricting Adversarial Circumvention of Embargoes Act of 2025. "China's growing purchases of Iranian oil and its support for Iran's ballistic missile program are not just violations of U.S. sanctions—they are direct threats to regional stability and to our allies," said Raja. "The Tracking and Restricting Adversarial Circumvention of Embargoes Act of 2025 gives Congress the intelligence and transparency needed to expose how the PRC enables Iran's most dangerous activities. By bringing these transactions into the light, we strengthen our ability to enforce sanctions and hold malign actors accountable."

On Thursday, Raja demanded answers from the Department of Homeland Security following reports that an ICE operation in Elgin resulted in a vehicle crash and the deployment of chemical irritants that exposed nearby residents — including at least one young child — to harmful agents. In a letter to acting ICE Director Todd M. Lyons, Raja requested detailed information about ICE's protocols and procedures, including how the agency evaluates environmental and public health risks in densely populated areas and what follow-up procedures it implements after deploying chemical irritants. "I am outraged that a brazen ICE operation in Elgin resulted in a car crash and the deployment of chemical irritants that left multiple people needing medical treatment. Spraying tear gas in a residential neighborhood is an unacceptable danger to the community, no matter the circumstances," said Raja. "ICE and DHS must immediately explain how this operation was carried out, why chemical agents were used, and what accountability will follow."

Later that day, Defend The Vote (DTV), a national advocacy group focused on voting rights, formally endorsed Raja for U.S. Senate. "Raja Krishnamoorthi is one of Congress's most effective watchdogs, and he's never been afraid to take on the corporations and people exploiting consumers," said DTV Executive Director Brian Lemek. "He understands that the costs of corruption are paid by Illinois families every day. In the Senate, he'll be a powerful force for accountability, transparency, and real relief for Americans feeling squeezed."

On Saturday, Raja sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urging the immediate release and asylum approval of Guan Heng (关恒), a Chinese national who documented the Chinese Communist Party's mass detention camps targeting Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang and now faces deportation by U.S. immigration authorities. "The United States has a moral responsibility to stand up for victims of human rights abuses in Xinjiang, as well as the brave individuals who take immense personal risks to expose these abuses to the world. We also have a legal responsibility to protect those who seek refuge in our country from persecution by authoritarian governments, such as the People's Republic of China (PRC)," Raja wrote in the letter. "By indiscriminately targeting immigrant communities in an effort to meet aggressive deportation quotas, ICE is putting fear in the hearts of individuals who came to America to escape fear."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
