They told me I had too much personality to play it safe. So I became a lawyer. I became a public defender in Texas — standing next to people who had no power, no money, and no one else fighting for them. I took on cases others wouldn't touch. I represented Black Lives Matter activists pro bono. And I learned, early on, what it means to stand between everyday people and a system that would rather ignore them. With less than a month until Election Day, I wanted to give you an update from the campaign trail. If you’ve tried to reach me lately, there’s a good chance I was in my “mobile office” somewhere between Rockford and Carbondale. I’ve been on the road constantly — driving from town to town, county to county, listening to the people who make this state what it is. Because of my Central Illinois roots, I’ve made it a priority to spend as much time as possible outside of Chicagoland, showing up in every region and hearing directly from the people who call it home. As a son of Peoria, I’ve never forgotten where I come from. I launched this campaign outside the house where I was raised because that community shaped me — and because too often, communities like the one I grew up in get left out of the conversation in Washington. Since then, my team and I have criss-crossed Illinois nonstop — from the Quad Cities to Bloomington, from Peoria to Springfield, from Metro East to Carbondale (Go Salukis!). Just last month alone, I was in East St. Louis, Champaign, Normal, Moline, and Rockford, sitting down face-to-face with folks to hear about the challenges they’re facing and the opportunities they want to see. I’ve walked through manufacturing plants, visited safety-net hospitals, sat down with union workers, teachers, healthcare professionals, small business owners, and community leaders. I’ve listened more than I’ve talked. And everywhere I go in Illinois, I hear the same thing: People want a government that works for everyone — one that’s there for those fighting to make it, not just those who already have it made. That’s what this campaign is about. So in these final weeks, we’re scaling up — putting more organizers on the ground, activating volunteers in every region, expanding our outreach online – to ensure every Illinoisan hears our message. Right now, a shady Super PAC is blanketing the air and spending millions against us, so the best way we can fight back is by having a field team on the ground to talk with voters, hand out literature, and push GOTV efforts.
