I'm not going to stay silent while the most powerful man lies about my community and spreads even more fear and hatred. The truth is simple: Donald Trump has killed innocent Americans. Two of them were my constituents. Their names are Alex Pretti and Renee Good. But those names did not come out of the President's mouth last night. Because he is a coward. Trump should be ashamed of himself — he and the entire Republican Party have no empathy for their fellow Americans. They don't care that ICE murdered two citizens in cold blood; that's just collateral damage to them as they pursue their violent agenda of brutal crackdowns, mass detention, and deportation.
Monday night, I spoke up with fire in my heart. Because I'm angry as hell. ICE swooped into my community based on a lie: that the Somali-American community is collectively guilty for the actions of a small few. That the very existence of people who look like me and share my story are not acceptable in Trump's America. They used this lie to unleash absolute chaos. ICE agents all but suspended civil rights in their pursuit of deportations. Anyone with an accent or a different skin color was stopped in the street or in their cars and racially profiled. Homes were violently entered without proper warrants. Everyone from refugees to legal residents to US citizens were swept up in illegal detentions. When protesters and observers mobilized to fight back, ICE responded with unprecedented brutality. Ramming into civilian cars. Beating protesters with steel batons. Throwing innocent people to the ground. Ripping people from their vehicles through shattered glass. Tear-gassing and pepper-spraying babies, children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Shooting two innocent people dead in the street, with more injured. What ICE did in Minnesota lays bare the sheer cruelty, violence, authoritarianism, and incompetence of Trump's administration. But now, it's our time. Our time to raise our voices high, even when the President is speaking. Our time to fight back and defend basic American values of freedom and justice. Our time to defeat the MAGA far-right so we can pursue a truly progressive agenda that leaves no Americans behind.
In solidarity, Ilhan Omar
