8/17 Raja Update

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

With the election quickly approaching, many are worried about the White House's threats to defund the USPS, as well as the Postmaster-General's moves to delay mail delivery. Many are worried that President Trump has ordered this slow-down to hobble mail-in voting in the fall. The House has now been called into emergency session this week to deal with this issue as well as other matters related to the pandemic, and a hearing has been set on the USPS situation for one week from today. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke to MSNBC about these topics yesterday.

After much anticipation, Vice President Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris will be joining him on the Democratic ticket. They will both formally accept the nomination this week (virtually) at the Democratic Convention this week.  Kamala Harris is the first female and person of South Asian/Indian descent to be chosen as a running mate.  Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi appeared on Fox 32 and Good Day Chicago to discuss how thrilled he is with the Vice President's pick. He said as a guest on WBEZ's Reset, "It's fabulous -- she's ready to be president on day one. She's a beacon of hope not only for women, not only for people of color, but also for people of South Asian or Indian descent...it's a moment of pride."

The House sent a letter to the FDA last week requesting that e-cigarettes be temporarily taken off the market during the pandemic. Using e-cigs or vaping can cause increased chances of being diagnosed with Covid and suffering symptoms. Consumer Affairs reported results of a recent study showing that younger people who are vaping suffer from asthma, seizures, bronchitis, pneumonia, hospitalizations, collapsed lungs, and now are 5 times more likely than others to contract Covid. Congressman Raja spoke with WGN this week about this issue. As Chairman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, Congressman Raja told CNN, "This is true in vapers as young as 13, which is particularly concerning, given that young people increasingly are driving the spread of COVID-19, threatening the health and safety of Americans of all ages." The subcommittee has requested that the FDA respond this coming week. The Congressman will be waiting for their response.

Continuing his investigation into faulty COVID-19 antibody tests, Congressman Raja wrote an opinion piece for The Hill. He said there are still 170 unreviewed tests on the market. With an upwards of 60,000 new cases of Covid per day, he warns that faulty tests are contributing to the already out of control spread of the disease in the U.S.

We'll continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in DC and Illinois.
