8/3 Raja Update

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Philips Respironics has one of the largest contracts with the federal government to produce low-cost ventilators. In fact, the federal government provided precious research and development dollars to help Philips produce these ventilators. When a shortage of these precise ventilators developed at the start of the pandemic, Congressman Raja led the investigation into why. Thousands of Philips' internal emails and documents obtained by the House Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, which Congressman Raja chairs, show the Trump administration delayed negotiations, overpaid for ventilators to the tune of half-a-billion dollars, and still did not get the promised ventilators when Americans desperately needed them. Congressman Raja has been featured speaking extensively on this matter on MSNBC, Morning Joe, The Hill, and NBC News. He told ABC News, "This should be something that everyone is very concerned about...We're very concerned that the same incompetence and gross negligence that characterize the contract negotiations [with the ventilators] are happening elsewhere."  Congressman Raja will keep pushing to hold the administration accountable for their handle of the pandemic.

Last Friday, extra unemployment benefits expired under the CARES act that was passed earlier in the year. As a new stimulus bill is in the works, Congressman Raja spoke with WGN Radio about stimulus checks and unemployment benefits. He told WGN that there is agreement from both sides about another stimulus check, but there is still some disagreement about unemployment benefits. He said, "To come up with a fine-tuned unemployment bump for each individual person and their circumstances is very challenging. I think there is a move to get the compensation out there faster so that it gets into the economy." Congressman Raja will continue to negotiate a new stimulus package in the House.

This past week, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi was awarded with Northwest Suburban Bar Association's "Truth to Power Award." Congressman Raja is deeply grateful for this honor and will continue his important work in the years ahead.

We'll continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in DC and Illinois.

Thank you again and best wishes to you and your family.
