Raja Update 8.24.21

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Yesterday, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke with CNN about what he was hoping to learn from the classified briefings on Afghanistan he will be receiving through his work on the House Intelligence Committee.  "Just a couple days ago we had a family that was notified by the State Department that their evacuation flight was that day and they should bring their paperwork and passes. They did all that and, unfortunately, they were turned away at the gate. There appears to be some communications issues between the State Department and the security who are guarding the airport, and this is incredibly frustrating."

Congressman Raja also spoke with NPR this week about the situation in Afghanistan and the mistakes he felt were made. "I think that there was a failure, we're trying to pinpoint what exactly that failure was. Whether it was simply a failure to understand the nature of the rapid disintegration of the Afghan military forces, or whether it was a failure to ring the bell so to speak and make sure that appropriate actions were taken to make sure we were prepared for what happened. In either case I think there was a failure to evacuate our Afghan partners and others."

The Congressman also spoke with CNN today about his opinion on President Biden's August 31st deadline for withdrawal from Afghanistan. "I respectfully submit that we have to stay until we get our American citizens out and as many of our Afghan allies out as possible. The one thing that everybody knows now is there is probably a terrorist threat from ISIS and we have to be mindful of that, but at the end of the day we cannot leave Americans behind that want to get out."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
