Raja Update 11/15/2021

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, the Congressman is leading a growing effort to increase government oversight of social media companies to protect young users that are vulnerable to dangerous and inappropriate content. "TikTok's algorithm, which determines the content to show each user, is dangerous for minors because it learns users' interests and exploits their vulnerabilities much faster than other social media platforms' algorithms" Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote.

The Congressman's scrutiny of e-cigarette manufacturers intensified this week. The manufacturers, banned from legally selling their products, reportedly plan to switch to synthetic nicotine in an effort to avoid FDA regulation. In a letter to Puff Bar, a large e-cigarette and e-liquid manufacturer, Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote, "Puff Bar's meteoric rise in popularity among kids resulted in $156 million in sales in 2020 alone. Puff Bar should not be allowed to continue harming children due to FDA's failure to regulate synthetic nicotine, and I intend to put an end to your predatory practices."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi chaired a subcommittee hearing about what has or has not worked to overcome vaccine hesitancy. During Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Dr. Ngozi Ezike's testimony, they emphasized the importance of local efforts directed at communities where vaccination rates are low and proactively combatting vaccine misinformation. "This provides very useful feedback as to what might be working, what could use tweaking and what might not be working," said the Congressman.

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
