This should alarm every American

What's happening right now across this country should alarm every single one of us. Antisemitic attacks are surging. Islamophobia is spreading unchecked. LGBTQ+ Americans are facing threats and violence simply for existing openly. And South Asian Americans are experiencing hate, harassment, and violence at a level that demands more than words. No American should feel they don't belong in this country because of where they were born, how they worship, who they love, or what their name sounds like. I've lived that truth my whole life. And this week, I decided to act on at least one piece of it. I brought together every South Asian member of Congress, along with state and local elected officials from seven states and leading advocacy organizations, for a national roundtable in Washington focused on the surge in hate targeting our community: We discussed what our communities are actually experiencing right now, what's driving this surge in hate, and — most importantly — what we can actually do to stop it. Here's the truth: Hate crimes across many different communities are dramatically underreported, and the federal government doesn't have a clear picture of what's really going on or why. That's exactly why I reintroduced the Hate Crimes Commission Act earlier this year. This legislation would create a bipartisan commission to investigate what's actually driving this rise in hate — including the role social media and technology play in spreading it — so we can build real strategies to stop it, for every community being targeted. I've faced this hatred personally. I've had a sitting elected official call for the mass deportation of Indians and label me a "foreign occupier." I've watched a demonstrator tear an Indian flag apart while a crowd chanted hate. I know exactly what this feels like, and I refuse to let any community face it alone.
