9/8 Raja Update

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This past week, the House subcommittee that Congressman Raja chairs notched a big victory for taxpayers when the Trump Administration bowed to committee pressure and canceled a botched $646 million ventilation contract with Phillips Respironics. CNN, KTVZ, Pittsburgh Business Times, MSNBC, and CNBC have all spoken with Congressman Krishnamoorthi at length about this contract in which the Trump Administration's negotiating team led by Peter Navarro agreed to pay almost 5x what had previously negotiated for ventilators by the Obama White House.  Raja told CNBC, "American taxpayers just saved over $400 million dollars after my subcommittee shined a spotlight on just one of the Trump Administration's wasteful contracts for COVID-19 supplies...My subcommittee will continue to press Philips to repay the remaining money it owes the federal government. We will also be requesting documentation from all the contracts that Peter Navarros has negotiated regarding Covid-19 response." He also told CNN, "[Peter Navarro] failed to demonstrate the grasp of negotiation fundamentals. He is no longer a trustworthy steward of taxpayer money." Congressman Krishnamoorthi and his subcommittee will continue to investigate this matter.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many Americans to lose loved ones; lose their jobs; lose their businesses, and so much more. Congressman Raja is calling for more government assistance regarding the economy.  Featured in Forbes, Congressman Raja said, "There is widespread support for additional funding for American small business, but disagreement about the amount and timeframe of the support. We need to resolve those differences quickly. I also believe we need to forgive PPP loans on the smaller side. We can't treat these loans the same way we would treat a traditional loan."

Another aspect of the ongoing pandemic, is the opening of schools. As some college campuses welcome back students this fall, Congressman Raja believes that for the health of students, nicotine products including e-cigarettes should be banned from campus given the link between nicotine and susceptibility to developing COVID-19. He spoke to KTVZ, The Hill and University Business extensively about this issue. The bottomline is that students who vape are five times more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19, and therefore, we have to prevent them from doing so.

Finally, last month, the Congressman spoke to the Illinois Democratic Delegation to the Democratic National Convention. You can watch his full speech here.

We'll continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in Illinois and DC.

Thank you again and best wishes to you and your family.
