Dear Sandeep,
Labor Day is much more than just a long weekend and the unofficial end of summer. On this day, we celebrate the achievements of American workers.
This day originated during a burgeoning time for the labor rights movement. Americans were working long hours just to make ends meet; child labor was at its peak; and many faced unsafe working conditions. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill into law making Labor Day a legal holiday to recognize the tremendous efforts of American workers in helping build what is now the world's greatest economy.
It's been a longstanding tradition for this holiday to be marked by parades, barbecues, and large gatherings. However, due to COVID-19, celebrations this year will look different. I know we will all find a way to celebrate and spend the day reflecting on how far we've come as a country, while recognizing how far we have to go. On this Labor Day, I ask you to think about our workers (especially our frontline workers who are taking care of us during the pandemic), and I ask you to consider what more we need to do to help American workers and families prosper even as we battle the pandemic.
Thank you again for everything you do to keep America working for everyone.
Happy Labor Day!
Warm Regards,
Raja
