9/1 Raja Update

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Last week, Congressman Raja Kirshnamoorthi questioned Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and USPS Board of Governors President Robert Duncan on national TV during the House Oversight and Reform committee hearing. The hearing focused on the slowdown of the mail service ahead of the election in November. ESR highlighted the letter Congressman Raja and Congresswoman Katie Porter wrote to John Badger two weeks ago regarding Louis DeJoy's highly unlikely appointment to Postmaster General. Congressman Raja also highlighted that USPS Chair Robert Duncan also serves currently on the Boards of two Republican Super-PACs, which puts his nonpartisan independence in doubt. The Congressman spoke on Talking Liberties saying, "The leadership of the postal service is deeply invested in party politics, at the same time that they're running the post office. And so, necessarily there are a lot of question marks about how they are making decisions about important aspects of the postal service and what's motivating those decisions -- especially after President Trump's recent comments that he's trying to hobble mail in voting, but not funding the USPS at the appropriate levels." Congressman Raja will keep fighting for safe elections with vote-by-mail.

This week, we learned the Director of National Intelligence will no longer brief Congress in-person on election security matters. This is startling news, because Congress plays a key role in intelligence briefings, and it's clear that Russia is actively interfering in the upcoming 2020 elections. Congressman Raja has spoken on this issue with CNBC, MSNBC, and NPR. He said on MSNBC, "The reason why the President and the White House don't want these in person briefings is very simple -- they are trying to muzzle their career public servants who try to tell the truth, try to call balls and strikes about what's going on with the intelligence community, and quite frankly he doesn't like the fact that they have revealed that Russia is actively interfering with these elections today, and they're doing so in a way that's completely different than what happened in 2016. That's why it's so important for us to meet with (the career intelligence officials) - be able to probe what they know and what resources we need to bring to bear to prevent the Russians from interfering in 2020 with the same effect that they did in 2016." As a member of the House Intelligence committee, Congressman Raja will keep expressing his concerns and make sure members are briefed on these security matters.

We'll continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in DC and Illinois.
