This week, the Congressman appeared on MSNBC to speak about the recent effort among lawmakers urging the intelligence community to declassify information on possible war crimes being committed by Russia. When asked by the host how this information could help deter Russia from engaging in further atrocities, the Congressman responded that, "The fact that Putin is now in a stalemate on the battlefield and on a lot of fronts in Ukraine means there's a possibility that he might use chemical or biological weapons and continue with the indiscriminate, and in my opinion, intentional bombings on civillians... unveiling potential plans might help to discourage them from going down that path as more people mobilize to oppose Moscow in it's war plans, but also it's important to make sure that we bear witness to what's happening in Russia and making sure whoever commanded this, including Putin, is held accountable."
Congressman Krishnamoorthi is spearheading the investigation into certain problematic health devices as part of his ongoing work on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. The investigation is taking place after reporters from ProPublica wrote about the numerous safety problems surrounding the FDA and the HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device. The device, created to help patients with severe heart failure, stopped meeting key federal standards as early as 2014, and is now connected to more than 3000 reported deaths. Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote in a letter to the FDA commissioner, "I am concerned by FDA's slow action, over multiple administrations, to protect patients from this product despite early warning signs."
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi also joined host John Williams to speak about his recent success passing major bipartisan legislation to establish mental health resources to assist doctors, nurses and healthcare workers. The Congressman said, "This is a big deal John, it's called the Dr. Lorna Breen act. It's named after a physician who committed suicide, she was an ER doctor who worked through the pandemic in New York City and was just completely overwhelmed by the death, the despair, the lack of PPE and everything else. Folks in Congress, including myself, wanted to recognize that healthcare workers -- we call them heroes but they're humans and they have been absolutely overwhelmed by the mental health toll of the pandemic, Their rates of burnout and even suicide are much higher than the rest of the population."
