Raja Update 3/7

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, with tensions still high in Ukraine, the Congressman joined MSNBC to discuss the ongoing situation. When asked if he believes that a no fly zone would lead to a direct military confrontation with Russia in light of Putin's previous comments, the Congressman said, "Yes, I think so. That's why I don't think the US or NATO allies will engage in a no-fly zone. However, the alternative which Mr. Zelensky emotionally asked for were fighter planes themselves. As you know, Ukraine is in need of fighter planes to combat Russian air assets - but they need Russian war planes because that's what their pilots are trained on. It turns out some of our NATO allies have those types of planes and are willing to potentially give those planes to the Ukrainians, but I and some of my colleagues would like the United States to help support the NATO allies in doing so."

The Congressman also joined Wolf Blitzer on CNN to discuss this issue after having a Zoom call directly from Ukrainian President Zelensky along with other US lawmakers. Wolf asked the Congressman what message Zelensky delivered to the United States. "He basically said 'I appreciate what you've done but we need more.' I have to say there is a unity of spirit among Democrats and Republicans in wanting to do more and listening to him."

Fox News recently reported on the legislation that Congressman Krishnamoorthi authored to support Ukrainian insurgency against Russia. The Congressman introduced bipartisan legislation called the SUPPORT Act that would provide aid for a Ukrainian insurgency if the Russians take over the country. In an interview with Fox News Digital, the Congressman said, "I think this is going to be a struggle that's not going to end in a week or a month or a couple of months, I think it might be one that's more long term... and we have to be there for the Ukrainians."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi also shared his thoughts in a Voice of America interview, where he said that support for the Ukrainians consists of: "Not only weapons, not only money, but also intelligence, so that our partners are able to take advantage of any useful intelligence to defend themselves. At the end of the day, these people are fighting for their freedom, fighting for their democracy. We need to be helping them as much as we can without crossing the line."

The Congressman joined the hosts of FOX32 to share his thoughts on some of the key elements in President Biden's State of the Union Address. Congressman Krishnamoorthi told the hosts that, "I think one issue that moved me and a lot of people in the chamber is the issue of prescription drug price reform and the 13 year old boy that has type one diabetes... he stood up, and the President's point is that we can not have a situation where insulin is so expensive that this young boy or any person would be denied the life saving medicine that they need... I saw everyone in the chamber get up, and now it's time to get to a solution ASAP. Nobody should have to ration the rest of their spending based on prescription drug prices."

The Daily Herald reported on the announcement that, due in large part to efforts led by Congressman Krishnamoorthi, the Department of Homeland Security is reestablishing the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council, a council for Homeland Security officials to engage with higher education representatives on issues related to homeland security and the academic community. The Congressman told reporters that, "HSAAC was dissolved at a precarious time when the threat of cyberattacks and intellectual property theft at academic and research institutions were on the rise. Today, we celebrate the formation of this critical body which will serve an integral role in increasing the long-term national security of the United States by forming lasting partnerships between academic and national security officials."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
