Raja Update 5/15

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, Congressman Raja secured $500,000 in federal funding for Harper College to launch an aviation maintenance program that addresses a gap in affordable training and education in the northern Illinois region. The grant will cover startup costs including developing curriculum and purchasing equipment. "I am thrilled to be able to secure this key funding for Harper College's Aviation Maintenance Program," Congressman Raja said. "It's long been a priority of mine to expand career and technical educational opportunities for students across our state, and I can't wait to see the new heights to which Harper soars thanks to this funding."

On Monday, Congressman Raja and Republican colleague Rep. Kelly Armstrong wrote an op-ed for The Hill on the promising impacts nuclear fusion can have on American economic growth and energy independence. Citing a National Laboratory's recent creation of a controlled nuclear fusion reaction that generated more energy than it used, the lawmakers wrote, "This nuclear fusion breakthrough not only brings us one step closer to reproducing the power of the sun in a laboratory, but it also helps us to guarantee American energy independence. If scientists can deploy this fusion reaction economically and on a large scale, it would offer a new reliable energy source. Fusion fuels could run a power plant for years with virtually no emissions...so as we look to our energy needs for the century ahead, fusion helps us toward a more prosperous future. This is a development that Democrats and Republicans like us can both applaud."

On Wednesday, Congressman Raja joined Brian Sullivan on CNBC to discuss his bipartisan bill to ban congressional stock trading. The Congressman told Brian, "Even the appearance of [Members of Congress] trading, regardless of whether they use insider information, just erodes trust, and people quite frankly don't believe they didn't trade based on inside information." Talking about his bill, the Congressman told Brian, "You can't own or trade individual stocks, that's kind of a basic issue. Quite frankly when I tell my constituents that you're allowed to do that now, they can't believe it. They thought it was illegal yesterday, so the fact that it's not is anathema to everything they believe. They think that you should be serving them, not your stock portfolio."

We will continue to bring you news about Raja's work in D.C. and Illinois.
