Raja Update 5/30

Dear Sandeep,

Happy belated Memorial Day! We hope you had a nice long weekend honoring those members of the US military who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom.

This past Friday, Congressman Raja hosted a town hall meeting to discuss the fentanyl epidemic as part of his work on the bipartisan Fentanyl Prevention Caucus. He convened a panel of experts and recovering addicts to discuss solutions to the epidemic as well as how to support those who have been affected by this crisis.

Last Tuesday, Congressman Raja joined Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC to discuss the debt ceiling, China, TikTok, and Russia. With regards to China and the debt ceiling, he cautioned that "the long-term goal in [Chinese] competition with the US is to do whatever it takes to undermine US influence, undermine the US economy, and undermine the influence of the US Dollar and anything that is denominated in terms of the dollar-- including the payments system which dominates the world, whether it's for oil or other products that even the Chinese need to pay in dollars for."

On Friday, Congressman Raja discussed the need for Congress to avoid a disastrous default with Wolf Blitzer on CNN. Highlighting the human cost of failing to raise the debt ceiling, Congressman Raja said Republicans need to "let the hostages go," referring to "our seniors who would be delayed in receiving their social security checks starting apparently on June 5th, military veterans who might not get their payments, and, of course, all those people with retirement savings in the stock market who would see their value tank as well. So at this point, we have to avoid a default and we have to come to terms."

Also this past week, Congressman Raja appeared on Bloomberg to discuss the debt limit and China with hosts Joe Mathieu and Annmarie Hordern. On raising the debt ceiling, Congressman Raja said he's "ready to go whenever it's time to vote," adding that he'll do "whatever is needed to get to a deal." On China, he stressed the need for communication between senior US & Chinese officials, saying "if we need to be talking to their upper-echelon officials, and we should be to make sure there's no miscalculations, no mistakes, and also to make very clear what are our red lines in the relationship, then we have to do whatever it takes to have those discussions happening."

We will continue to bring you news about Raja's work in D.C. and Illinois.
