Raja Update 8/12

Dear Sandeep,

On Monday, Raja stood alongside Texas state legislators who have found refuge in Illinois in an ongoing effort to prevent a politically-motivated attempt to redistrict Texas, as demanded by Donald Trump. Raja called the situation a "man-made catastrophe for democracy," adding that it was an opportunity for the Democratic party to show voters they are willing to stand up against Republican attacks on political norms.

On Tuesday, Raja introduced a resolution demanding that the Trump Administration must avoid any potential presidential pardons or clemency deals with convicted felon Ghislaine Maxwell. Raja said, "Ghislaine Maxwell enabled one of the most appalling child exploitation networks in modern history. Her conviction was not only just, it was necessary. The idea that she could now bargain for clemency insults every survivor and undermines our justice system. The message must be clear: no one gets to traffic children and then negotiate their way out of accountability."

Also on Tueday, Raja joined CNN's This Morning to condemn Republican efforts to unfairly redistrict Texas, the need for transparency and Congressional oversight with the Epstein files, and Trump's decision to fire the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Raja said, "President Trump is trying to distract attention away from the Epstein files and his mishandling of the economy, and is staging this episode where he's ordering Governor Abbott to redraw the map…. As we said yesterday to Governor Abbott as we welcomed these legislations, 'Don't mess with Texas, don't mess with democracy.'"

Later that morning, Raja joined City Club of Chicago's CEO Dan Gibbons for an open policy discussion on how Raja is standing up to the Trump Administration, holding our executive branch accountable, and protecting our constitutional rights.

That afternoon, Raja went door to door in Schaumburg to have face-to-face conversations with his neighbors and collect petition signatures to get on the ballot. Raja is deeply committed to connecting with Illinois families from across the state, and he is ready to bring their voices and perspectives to the U.S. Senate and be the fighter they deserve.

On Wednesday, Raja joined WGN's Lisa Dent to further discuss how Texas Republican lawmakers' attempt to unfairly redistrict Texas threaten the very foundation of our democracy. Raja said "Trump is routinely trying to distract us from perhaps the number one issue for working families, which is the economy. I'm hearing about this everyday, I'm on the phone with people every day with people in the middle class who are scared, and I think he knows he's in trouble with voters on the economy."

On Thursday, Raja attended AFSCME 31's event with Illinois retirees, where he spoke to attendees about his commitment to safeguarding the benefits that retirees have worked hard to earn over the years. At the event, Raja pledged to defend the ongoing attacks on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security in Washington.

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
