Raja Update 10/14

Dear Sandeep,

On Monday, Raja attended a U.S. Senate candidate forum at Chicago State University, where he highlighted the widespread damage that the Republican cuts to health care and essential services will have on Americans in every community across the country. Raja called on Republicans to come to the table to address the impending explosion of healthcare costs, "Obamacare premium tax credits are about to expire very shortly, and once they do another 5 million people are about to lose their health coverage. Once they lose their health coverage then all of us are affected because they go to emergency rooms, and the premiums rise for everyone.

On Wednesday, Raja spoke with The RiverBender about the IL Senate race thus far, what motivated him to run for U.S. Senate, and why he has prioritized bringing his campaign to every corner and every community across Illinois. Raja described his campaign as a "mobile office" with stops in Peoria, Chicago, Schaumburg, Madison County, and several counties, cities, and villages in Southern Illinois, including Du Quoin and East Alton. He emphasized the urgency of his outreach efforts, saying, "I think we have momentum but a lot of work to do today with five months before the primary and no time to waste." Raja also highlighted Senator Durbin's legislative record, noting that he has delivered resources throughout Illinois and provided "impeccable" constituent services. He praised Durbin for his long role in Illinois government and politics, acknowledging the challenge of filling Durbin's 'huge shoes" and expressed his commitment to building on the senator's legacy. Raja pointed to economic pressures facing Illinois residents, including affordability challenges related to housing, groceries, and gas prices. "We need someone to bring some economic stability to Illinois and advocate for a better path forward," Raja said.

On Thursday, Raja spoke to WCIA/Channel 3 News in Springfield about the legislative action he has taken to combat the harm that Trump's reckless tariffs have unleashed on Illinois soybean farmers. While Illinois soybean farmers haven't sold a single bean to China this year because of Trump's trade war, Raja is urging the USDA to expand its focus beyond China and open up new trade channels in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East. "In the meantime, let's hedge against what's happening right now by selling into other markets. Unfortunately, the Trump Administration is not doing the work of kind of making sure these markets are able to absorb our soybeans," said Raja.

On Friday, Raja joined MSNBC's 'The Last Word' to discuss the Democrats' fight for transparency on the Epstein files & to end the government shutdown. When asked by Anchor Ali Velshi what he thinks Donald Trump is trying to accomplish by the chaos he has created in Washington, Raja answered "He thinks that by firing workers – illegally by the way – or doing any of these other things, he is somehow going to pressure Senate Democrats, or others, to cave, and to basically to bend to his political will. That's not going to happen. In fact, when I stand with AFGE and these other workers in Chicago, as I did this past week, I think their resolve stiffens in the face of these threats. They actually feel more emboldened to take their position, which is: don't surrender to Donald Trump. I think that public sentiment is shifting against President Trump. I think that he is under tremendous pressure to do what every reasonable person is asking him to do, which is to at least extend these Obamacare premium tax credits. If you don't – and those notices, by the way, are going out in the mail right now – you're going to see premiums explode by 2 and 3 hundred percent, and it will be a catastrophe."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
