Dear Sandeep,
On Monday of last week, Raja attempted once again to conduct oversight of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois – as his congressional duty. The Trump Administration once again improperly denied him access. "I demanded access to the Broadview ICE facility to perform oversight — as is my right and my duty as a Member of Congress," said Raja. "Once again, the Trump Administration slammed the door on transparency and accountability. Congress and the American people have every right to see what's happening behind those walls."
On Tuesday, Raja joined CNN's Laura Coates to discuss the unlawful militarization of ICE in Illinois. "They're now separating families, they're taking 18-year-old women away from their families, they are snatching people out of schools, churches, hospitals, places of worship," said Raja. "This is wrong. It's illegal, and they're also detaining them in ways that are contrary to the law and subject to oversight, but they are not allowing us to conduct oversight. So all of this is completely unacceptable, and we have to speak up and speak out against what's happening."
On Wednesday, Raja visited Loretto Hospital, a safety-net hospital in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, to tour the facility and hear firsthand how cuts to Medicaid will impact patient care and services. On the impending expiration of ACA tax credits, which will lead to skyrocketing health care costs, Raja said, "We Democrats are basically asking the president to make just one concession, and that is take this Obamacare tax credit issue off the table, extend those tax credits — especially as we're approaching the holiday season — and let's move on, as opposed to allowing this issue to fester."
Later that afternoon, Raja traveled to the stateline to tour River Bluff Nursing Home in Rockford. He met with home Administrator Laura Schaffer to hear firsthand how Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" will intensify the issues that nursing homes across the county are already facing, including understaffed facilities, higher medical debts, and reduced long-term care coverage. Without the federal support that essential programs like Medicaid provide, facilities like River Bluff will no longer be able to provide quality care and services to those in need. "Once that happens, a whole new cohort of uninsured people are going to unfortunately come to our emergency rooms, again spiking all of our health insurance," Raja said, referring to the potential expiration of COVID pandemic-era ACA tax credits.
On Friday, Raja joined CNN's Anderson Cooper on Anderson Cooper 360 to discuss President Trump's decision to commute Ex-Representative George Santos' prison sentence. When asked what he thought about the situation, Raja responded, "I think it's appalling, it's not right. I think there are two systems of justice that people perceive in this county: one if you're connected, you're powerful, you have the ear of the president, you get one set of treatment. And then if you're not, you get another set. I was with some people who said that they immigrated to this country in part to escape systems where that type of treatment existed – to come here, and now they're finding it made it out by this president, which is disgraceful."
