Dear Sandeep,
Last Monday, the Daily Herald covered the legislation Raja recently authored and introduced to rename the United States Post Office at 1300 East Northwest Highway in Palatine as the "Bernie Bluestein Post Office Building," honoring Bernard "Bernie" Bluestein, a 102-year-old northwest suburban resident and one of the last surviving members of the U.S. Army's famed Ghost Army. "For decades, Bernie's valor remained classified, but today his extraordinary service finally receives the recognition it deserves, including right here in our community at Harper College," said Raja. "Soon, the Palatine post office will proudly bear his name, a fitting, permanent tribute to a humble hero who embodies the spirit of the Greatest Generation and the very best of Illinois."
On Tuesday, Raja joined CNN's Jake Tapper on The Lead with Jake Tapper, where he discussed his fight to prevent Affordable Care Act premiums from skyrocketing. When explaining why Republicans cannot wait any longer to address health care costs, Raja said "Next Monday, Jake, millions of people are about to receive notices in the prelude to Open Enrollment on November 1st, showing that their premiums are going to spike by 200% and 300%, in some cases. Four million are about to lose their health insurance as a consequence within the next year, and 22 million Americans are about to see their health care premiums increase. So, we want to take that off the table right now, and just extend those Obamacare tax credits so that we can avoid these health care costs skyrocketing, very shortly."
On Wednesday, Raja traveled to the Quad Cities region to visit a Taylor Ridge soybean and corn farm, where he heard directly from Illinois farmers about the devastating impacts of President Trump's trade war and China's retaliatory tariffs on their livelihoods, input costs, and local jobs. During the tour, hosted by the Bohnsack and VanDaele families, Raja toured the farm, discussed this year's harvest and input prices with local producers, and outlined his recent letter to the Trump Administration urging immediate, strategic action to protect Illinois agriculture from "the profound damage that President Trump's trade war is inflicting on Illinois soybean farmers." "Illinois farmers don't want aid, they want trade," Raja said at the farm. "Yet it's farmers paying the price for President Trump's reckless, go-it-alone trade war that has wiped out our largest export market. Farmers don't want one-time bailouts; they want markets, certainty, and a level playing field. I'm pressing the Trump Administration to open new export channels, strengthen income and risk management tools, and reaffirm that America's farmers will not be sacrificed for President Trump's geopolitical maneuvering."
On Thursday, Raja spoke to WSPY's Rick Koshko about why he decided to run to represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate, and what he's planning to fight for in office. Raja discussed at length the harm that the 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' which Raja calls the 'Large, Lousy Law' will impose on the American healthcare system. "Nine hospitals are about to close in rural Illinois. On top of these Obamacare or Affordable Care Act tax credits expiring, we're seeing kind of a slow motion kind of car wreck happening in our health care landscape, and we've got to stop it," said Raja.
On Friday, Raja joined anchor Kate Bouldan on CNN's News Central to discuss the harm that the government shutdown is inflicting on families whose health care costs will explode if the ACA tax credits are not extended. "Right now, the president controls all branches of government. He wants to come to the Democrats to get some votes because he doesn't have enough to pass legislation to do what he wants with the government. But the status quo is not working; health care costs are set to explode, as Affordable Care Act tax credits are about to expire, and notices are going out next week to families," said Raja. "What we're saying is, take that issue off the table, help families avoid these exploding health care costs, right now."
We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
