As I’ve been traveling Illinois, I’ve heard time and time again from working families about their skyrocketing health insurance premiums. Here’s what happened: Republicans had every opportunity last year to work with Democrats to extend critical ACA tax credits that were helping millions of Americans afford health coverage. These weren’t radical new programs – they were subsidies that had been successfully reducing premiums and expanding access to care to millions of families. Instead, Republicans let them expire. And now families are paying the price. The Real-World ImpactWe’re not talking about abstract policy debates. We’re talking about real people facing real consequences:
This was entirely predictable. Democrats warned that letting these subsidies expire would cause premiums to spike and coverage to drop. Republicans didn’t care. They had a chance to put families first and chose not to. This Didn’t Have to HappenThe frustrating part is that this was completely avoidable. These tax credits have historically had bipartisan support, and they were working. They reduced the uninsured rate, made coverage more affordable, and stabilized insurance markets. All Congress had to do was extend them. It wasn’t complicated. It wasn’t controversial among the American people, who overwhelmingly wanted these credits to continue. But Republicans chose to let them expire anyway, and now working families are dealing with the consequences of that decision. I Won’t Stop FightingI want to be clear about where I stand: I won’t stop fighting to restore the subsidies that families depend on and lower health care costs. Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. And when we have tools that successfully make coverage more affordable – like the ACA tax credits – we should be expanding them, not letting them expire. The conversations I’ve had across Illinois reinforced what I already knew: people are tired of politicians treating their health care as a bargaining chip. They need leaders who will actually fight for them. Together we can make sure Congress works for the American people, and not against them. In solidarity, Raja |

Republicans let ACA tax credits expire.
