Donald Trump campaigned on ending America’s forever wars. He promised to bring troops home, to stop nation-building, and to “put America first.” Instead, he’s committing the United States to “running” Venezuela – a sovereign nation of 28 million people – for the foreseeable future, while American taxpayers foot the bill for a regime change operation they never asked for and overwhelmingly oppose. Let me be absolutely clear: I oppose any attempt to take control of Venezuela for its oil. And without a war powers resolution from Congress, Trump has ZERO authority to commit violence in America’s name. The Quiet Part Out LoudTrump has already said what this is really about. This isn’t about stopping drug cartels or protecting American safety – it’s about enriching oil corporations and his corrupt billionaire friends. Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, and that’s what’s driving Trump’s unconstitutional military adventure. The administration claims they’re fighting narco-terrorism. But they just pardoned the former President of Honduras – a man convicted in an American court of narco-terrorism. You can’t claim to be fighting drug traffickers while literally pardoning convicted narco-terrorists. This military adventure is about oil. This is about private profit extracted through public violence. And the American people deserve better. A Dangerous Pattern EmergingWhat’s happening with Venezuela isn’t a one-off. Trump is threatening to repeat this playbook in Mexico, Greenland, Cuba, and Colombia, with his rhetoric ramping up significantly over the past week. There are growing concerns among lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle that current military actions may be deliberately provocative. This is how manufactured wars begin: with provocations, with incidents, with carefully constructed pretexts for violence that was always the intended outcome. Where Is Congress? After the Vietnam War, Congress passed the War Powers Resolution to prevent exactly this scenario – secret wars, unauthorized military action, violence committed in the American people’s name without their consent. The Constitution is unambiguous: Congress, not the President alone, has the power to declare war. Yet the MAGA-controlled Senate has completely abdicated its constitutional responsibility for oversight and checks on war powers. Just last week, Republicans came together to block a resolution to check Trump’s power in Venezuela. Let me be clear, a War Powers Resolution isn’t radical; it’s constitutionally required. This is the check on the executive branch that our Founders intended. It’s the transparency Americans deserve. And it’s the accountability that prevents reckless military action that serves private interests and not national security. This Isn’t What We Voted ForAmericans across the political spectrum are tired of forever wars. They’re tired of watching their tax dollars fund military action while schools crumble, health care costs skyrocket, and infrastructure decays. They’re tired of being lied to about the reasons for war, only to discover years later that the original justification was a pretext for something else. We didn’t elect a king. We elected a president who must operate within constitutional constraints. If there’s a legitimate case for military action in Venezuela, let it be made publicly, debated openly, and voted on by our elected representatives. That’s how democracy is supposed to work. We Need Fighters With BackboneAt a time when the MAGA-controlled Senate has completely abdicated its responsibility for oversight and constitutionally required checks on war powers, we need real fighters with a backbone pushing back, now more than ever. The most important thing we can do right now is work to flip the Senate and elect leaders unafraid to check this out-of-control president’s dangerous and unconstitutional agenda. We need senators who will demand a War Powers Resolution. Who will investigate potential war crimes. Who will defend the Constitution even when it’s politically inconvenient. That’s the kind of senator I intend to be. And I need your help to get there. If we flip the Senate and elect leaders willing to be a check on this dangerous administration, we can stop this madness dead in its tracks before it spirals further out of control. That’s what I’m committed to fighting for. And I hope you’ll join me. In solidarity, Raja |
