Dear Sandeep,
Last Monday, Raja for Illinois released its latest television ad, "Moral." In the new spot, Raja, an immigrant himself, unpacks the harm Donald Trump's ICE has done to communities across Illinois and the country, and outlines our only choice: fighting back. "Donald Trump has weaponized ICE against our cities and our people. Torn apart families…terrorized neighborhoods. We should abolish Trump's ICE. We can't have a government or ICE running out of control. It's morally wrong, and it's unlawful," Raja says in the ad. "We can either roll over, or we can fight. I say we fight…Fight in the courts, in the halls of Congress. We are in the fight of our lives."
On Tuesday, Raja criss-crossed the state to highlight how rising costs and federal funding cuts are hitting Illinois families — and to press for solutions that lower everyday expenses and protect opportunity. In East St. Louis, Raja met with pharmacists and staff at an independent community pharmacy to discuss how pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) inflate prescription drug prices, reimburse pharmacies below cost, and restrict patient choice—putting access to care at risk. In Champaign-Urbana, Raja toured the University of Illinois' Soybean Innovation Lab to examine how federal cuts to agricultural research and USAID programs hurt Illinois farmers, disrupt food supply chains, and raise long-term costs for consumers. He concluded the day at Fairview Elementary School in Normal, where he met with educators and community partners to call for the restoration of Full-Service Community Schools and afterschool funding that working families rely on.
On Wednesday, Raja continued his affordability tour by heading north to the Quad Cities, where he convened a housing affordability roundtable in Moline to discuss his First Home Affordability Act. Raja then traveled to Rockford, where he visited the Northern Illinois Food Bank to spotlight the growing strain on emergency food providers caused by SNAP cuts and new paperwork requirements set to take effect February 1. "Across Illinois, families are paying more for everyday essentials – prescriptions, groceries, and more – while this administration cuts community institutions and family support systems," said Raja. "From East St. Louis to Champaign-Urbana to Normal, I'm fighting these abrupt, often politically motivated cuts that do nothing but hurt our families. Affordability and opportunity shouldn't depend on where you live in our state or the temperament of the President on any given day."
On Friday, over 50 Latino ministers endorsed Raja's campaign for U.S. Senate, traveling from across Illinois to stand together on Chicago's West Side and offer a sweeping signal of support. Joined by Alderman Felix Cardona and Pastor John Zayas at a church in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood, Latino faith leaders from congregations statewide stood in solidarity with Raja's vision for creating in Illinois where everyone has a chance to succeed. "I'm an immigrant – if I were privileged to be elected, I would be the first immigrant elected to the U.S. Senate by the people of Illinois," said Raja. "We are all here with a common, uniting bond. We are all God's children, and we do the work that we have been called to do. In these perilous times, we must bind together to create an Illinois for our children to thrive in."
We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
