7/13 Raja Update

Dear Friend,

We hope all is well with you and your family and that you are safe and healthy.

Created in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the Opportunity Zones program provides tax incentives for investments in commercial projects and businesses in low-income areas. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, as the chairman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, is investigating the potential misuse of Opportunity Zones. The Subcommittee is still in the beginning stages of investigating, which included writing a letter to the U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Black Enterprise released comments from members on the subcommittee saying, "In particular, we are concerned about possible abuses in the Department's designation of certain census tracts as Qualified Opportunity Zones in Detroit, Los Angeles, and Oklahoma City. These areas appear unqualified for the program, and raise questions about whether Treasury's designations were done to benefit individuals or entities with a personal or political connection to President Trump." The letter is asking for a response by July 13. Congressman Raja will be waiting for a response and keep pressing for answers within this investigation.

States across the country are seeing spikes in COVID-19 cases, as many are wondering when a vaccine will become available for the virus. Before any sort of vaccine would be available to the public, it would have to be approved by the FDA. Congressman Raja spoke with WGN Radio about what the process looks like in order to have a vaccination available for the American people. He said, "We're not going to be able to resume life as normal until we have a vaccine and until we all get vaccinated...what my subcommittee is requesting to know is what is the process by which this vaccine will be deemed safe and effective. We need to make sure that there is a level of quality and level of safety that the American people can trust. And quite frankly, we can push back on what the anti-vaccination movement is trying to portray it as, which is something that is not safe, not effective, not something people need to get. But as you know, we cannot be safe until most of the population gets vaccinated." Congressman Raja will keep pushing for a safe and reliable vaccine.

We'll continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in DC and Illinois.
