7/27 Raja Update

Dear Sandeep,

We hope that all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Last Thursday, President Trump and Attorney General William Barr announced that they are sending federal law enforcement to Chicago. President Trump re-assigned hundreds of federal agents to the city. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke about this issue and others with CBS 2, The Roe Conn Show and FOX 32. As a guest on CBS's The Takeout Podcast he said, "I'm ok with federal forces coming so long as it's done in cooperation with local law enforcement...If it's a Portland-style presence, where they are going to come and do whatever the heck they want on the streets of Chicago, that would be deeply disturbing." Congressman Raja will continue to hold the Department of Justice accountable as well as ensure citizens are safe.

The Chicago Reporter reported that in 2018, Chicago taxpayers paid $113 million in police misconduct settlements and associated legal fees. In an Op-Ed Congressman Raja wrote for the Chicago Tribune, he said, "The Justice in Policing Act, recently passed by the U.S. House, establishes a National Police Misconduct Registry to track misconduct and disciplinary records of officers from across the country. This is real progress, but we need to go further - by requiring the disclosure of how those police misconduct settlements are funded. Taxpayers deserve to know whether those settlements are being paid out of police department funds specifically allocated for this purpose; whether the settlements are resulting in higher taxes; or whether they're being paid for through cuts in local programs and services." Congressman Raja is continuing to push for transparency regarding this spending.

During these times, we think about those who have paved the path for us all. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Rep. John Lewis and will keep getting into "good trouble" in his memory. A good friend and hero to Congressman Raja, John Lewis will lie in state at the US Capitol today.

We'll continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in DC and Illinois.

Thank you again and best wishes to you and your family.
