Raja Update 10.12.20

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi was featured this week in a PBS Frontline special focusing on the critical shortage of medical supplies facing America during the Coronavirus pandemic. Congressman Raja spoke with PBS about his investigation into the ventilator shortage: "Although Philips had been contracted to deliver [the ventilators] by this time, they're nowhere to be seen … given how much money that the federal government and the taxpayers have put into this project of developing these ventilators, the fact that I don't believe we have even one of these is not only surprising, it's shocking. That's all the more an indication of failure on the part of the government."

The Congressman also announced this week that the House Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy has launched an investigation into whether the Trump administration has put inappropriate pressure on the CDC and FDA to score political points. "We are particularly concerned that a little-known office within the White House — the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, part of the Office of Management and Budget — is exerting influence over what is supposed to be non-partisan, scientific messaging."

Congressman Raja also joined WBEZ this week, Chicago's NPR station, to address the President's reversal regarding the prospect of passing a new stimulus package before the November election. "He basically is governing by whim, instead of facts and science and the truth, and it really hurts our companies and business and employers throughout my district and pretty much everywhere in America … It appears that the negotiators were even caught by surprise by the President's tweets."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi took to the Chicago Tribune as well to advocate for more federal aid for states amid the Coronavirus pandemic. "This is not an Illinois problem or a 'blue state' problem. This is a problem occurring in every state across the country as a direct result of COVID-19 ... I am committed to finding a bipartisan solution to the daunting budget shortfalls faced by cities and states, red and blue alike. I remain hopeful that my colleagues from both sides of the aisle will join me in pointing a way out of our budget challenges instead of pointing fingers."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
