Raja Update 10.5.20

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, the Coronavirus pandemic has reached our country's highest office as the President was hospitalized with COVID-19. President Trump joins almost 7.5 million Americans who have contracted the virus, including more than 200,000 of whom have died from the disease. We wish the President and First Lady and all those with the disease a speedy recovery, and now we must do more to make sure our nation deals with it effectively.

Congressman Raja is on the frontlines of ensuring our response meets the scale of this global catastrophe. On Thursday, the Congressman voted to pass a new stimulus bill in the House, and he is optimistic that Speaker Pelosi and Secretary Mnuchin will reach an agreement on a new stimulus plan.

As a member of the House Oversight Committee, Congressman Krishnamoorthi is also hard at work holding the government accountable for the failures of the federal pandemic response. Last week, Congressman Raja announced he is opening an investigation into the Trump administration's deployment of rapid COVID-19 tests to nursing homes around the country without proper guidance regarding their operation: "When used improperly, tests can create dangerous situations. Epidemiologists have shared a concern with me that if tests with insufficient sensitivity are used to 'screen' visitors to nursing homes, false negatives risk allowing entry to contagious persons who could seed a deadly outbreak."

On a more positive note, the Congressman celebrated Mahatma Gandhi's 151st birth anniversary last week by introducing bipartisan legislation to honor the memory of the great independence leader. "Despite facing tremendous hardship and injustice throughout his life, Gandhi never wavered in his fight for freedom, dignity and equality for all. The example he set continues to inspire thousands of people young and old across the world today."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.

Thank you again and best wishes to you and your family.
