At the end of October, a congressional investigation, led by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, found that the Trump administration was misusing CDC funds for partisan political messaging -- funds originally intended for a coronavirus awareness campaign. Even more disturbing, the Trump Administration had vetted celebrities to appear in this ad campaign based on whether they supported President Trump. Now, on Tuesday of last week, the Department of Health and Human Services has informed Congressman Raja that the plans for a celebrity ad campaign have been canceled, and they have ended the contract with the ad agency that had been hired to create this campaign. This is a critical step in the right direction for depoliticizing the coronavirus response!
Congressman Raja, as Chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, also reprimanded the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week for failing to establish side-impact test standards for children's car seats and boosters, and allowing manufacturers to fashion their own standards. In the case of Evenflo, the manufacturer's own tests found a child using their 'Big Kid' booster seat could be paralyzed or killed in a side-impact crash, but given the lack of oversight by the NHTSA, the company was able to simply lower the bar and alter the test until their booster seat passed. "When we peeled the onion, we were just beside ourselves wondering what the heck is going on here," Congressman Raja said in an interview with ProPublica. The Congressman continues to demand greater regulation of the car seat industry and won't stop until the seats are regulated properly.
