Raja Update 12.21.20

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke with CNN on Sunday about the new stimulus bill coming out of Washington, and said the leadership has done "a herculean job at this point of pulling together this package … The text needs to be written for so many different programs, and it needs to all get ironed out very quickly, but I do feel confident that everything's going to come together." The Congressman also expressed confidence that the requisite funding measures would be passed in time to avoid a government shutdown: "I think that the negotiations have been going pretty well, and I think that we are looking at a good chance of completing that in short order." The Congressman also addressed the recently revealed cybersecurity breach affecting multiple federal agencies: "This is a massive attack ... and the attack is persisting; it's even continuing today, and so, we have to take this very seriously."

Congressman Raja made headlines earlier this week when he sharply criticized the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma executives for their role in exacerbating the opioid epidemic during a House Oversight Committee hearing. The Congressman pushed the president of Purdue Pharma, Craig Landau, to take responsibility for the company's involvement in the opioid crisis and to forgo the $3.5m bonus that he is currently seeking from Purdue Pharma, while the company enters bankruptcy proceedings to cover lawsuits related to the opioid OxyContin.

The Congressman also wrote an op-ed in The Hill, along with Rep. John Rose (R-TN), calling for legislative action to reform DIR (Direct and Indirect Remuneration) fees for independent pharmacies. Independent pharmacies are struggling amid the pandemic, when many Americans can't afford to lose access to critical medicines. "This is a difficult time for many, but our valued frontline pharmacies need not be another casualty of this pandemic. The time for DIR fee reform is now."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi also introduced a new bill into Congress on Tuesday, the Midnight Regulations Review Act, along with Reps. Maloney, Connolly and Speier. So-called 'midnight regulations' -- last minute rules enacted by outgoing presidents during the transition period -- are deeply problematic and antidemocratic. This new legislation would require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to provide Congress with a list of significant midnight regulations made during the transition period that could be repealed by Congress. This bill would make it more difficult for important rule changes to evade scrutiny during this critical transition period.

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
