Happy Presidents' Day

Dear Sandeep,

President's Day, originally a celebration of George Washington's birthday and often combined with a celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, has become to many of us, a much needed three-day weekend.  In light of current events, however, it's worth reflecting on the two people whom this day primarily celebrates.

Washington and Lincoln faced unprecedented challenges, which are almost unimaginable to us today -- the forming of a new republic unlike anything the world had ever seen and the safeguarding and preservation of that republic through the American Civil War.

Our democracy has been tested in the last few months, more so than at any point in the recent past, but we, as a country, have endured much worse, and the examples set by Washington and Lincoln show us that we can and we will emerge from these dark days a stronger, more perfect nation.

Long before there was any expectation that a president should leave office after two terms, George Washington -- leader of the continental army, the first president of the United States and still immensely popular across the country -- freely relinquished his power. Today, though it was a rocky transition, we have continued this tradition with the free and fair election of a new president, Joe Biden. And although President Joe Biden faces a deeply divided country, the difficult lessons of Abraham Lincoln's presidency have nevertheless shown us that the forces of unity in this country are stronger than the forces of division.

Today, in honor of Presidents' Day, let us come together and cherish that which unites us above all else.

Thank you, and wishing everyone a safe and healthy Presidents' Day.
