Raja Update 2.8.21

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Thanks to a new report by the Congressional Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, which Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi chairs, it has been discovered that baby food from some of the nation's largest manufacturers is tainted with toxic heavy metals. Committee Chairman Raja Krishnamoorthi sat down with CBS This Morning to discuss how this happened and what we need going to forward to address this grave issue. "I don't know a mom or dad that wants neurotoxins in their baby's foods." Congressman Raja intends to file legislation that would expand federal oversight of baby food by requiring the Food and Drug Administration to "do what the American people believe is its job to do, which is to make sure that the food that their babies consume is safe."

The Subcommittee's findings were also featured in the Washington Post and the New York Times. Several manufacturers of baby food chose not to cooperate with the investigation, which "raises the concern that perhaps they have evidence of even higher metallic content in their baby foods, compared to their competitors," Congressman Krishnamoorthi told the Times. The Congressman also spoke further with the Washington Post about the failures of the FDA: "Over the last decade advocates and scientists have brought this to the attention of the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA must set standards and regulate this industry much more closely, starting now. It's shocking that parents are basically being completely left in the lurch by their government."

Congressman Raja also joined Chicago Tonight to speak about the next Coronavirus stimulus and how Washington must treat this crisis with the urgency it demands by passing President Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus package. When asked if he prefers bipartisan support or a bigger price tag for the COVID-19 stimulus, Congressman Raja exclaimed, "Both!" adding that the Coronavirus pandemic is "too serious, the healthcare crisis too grave, and our economy is slowing down now. My constituents are demanding that Washington step up to the plate and help save the small businesses that are about to close."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
