Raja Update 8/3/22

Dear Friend,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, Congressman Raja wrote an op-ed in Newsweek sounding the alarm on the global food crisis caused by Russia's war on Ukraine and the need for U.S. involvement. Russia and Ukraine together produce about one third of the world's wheat and barley and nearly half of its sunflower oil. Russia's attacks on Ukrainian fields and processing facilities, along with its interference in Ukrainian agricultural exports impact millions of people worldwide who depend on Ukraine's food supply for sustenance. "The U.S. has both a moral and strategic imperative to lead in this crisis and prevent the suffering in Ukraine from spilling over into other countries and regions. A more stable and peaceful world is in everyone's interest, except for the dictators and autocrats like Putin who thrive on fear, anger, and instability."

On Sunday, Congressman Raja joined Jonathan Capehart on MSNBC to discuss his recent trip to Taiwan with Speaker Pelosi. "The two main objectives of the trip were first to reassure our allies, partners, and friends in the region, including Taiwan, that we were there with them, and under the Taiwan Relations Act, we were obligated to support Taiwan and its self-defense. And the second objective was to increase our economic ties… Many of [Taiwan's] companies have already pledged to invest $25 billion in fabricating semiconductor chips in the United States, and we're looking forward to seeing more of that happen". When about the timing of the trip, the Congressman responded, "What's happening in Ukraine is all the more reason why we need to strengthen our alliances and partnerships to prevent what happened in Ukraine from happening in Taiwan."

Congressman Raja also spoke with The American Prospect about his investigation into how tech companies are handling women's private reproductive health data. Tech firms' collection of digital location, search, and cookie data can all be used to bring evidence against a person who gets an abortion in a restrictive state. "After Roe was overturned, these practices have become very dangerous, especially in trigger states where abortion is practically banned," the Congressman told The Prospect. "The bottom line is this is absolutely a place where the government needs to step in and say what is and is not allowed with regard to the use of data. The stakes have just become higher than they were before."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
