Dear Sandeep,
This week, Congressman Raja appeared on ABC7 Chicago after helping an Elgin mother claim her son on her taxes when the IRS insisted he was dead. Last month, Eboney McDaniel reached out to ABC7 telling them she couldn't claim her 5-year old son on her taxes because the IRS had him listed as deceased even after the Social Security Administration told her it corrected the error. Shortly after Congressman Raja got involved, McDaniel said she got a call from the IRS confirming that Jaxen was no longer listed as deceased, and she was finally able to claim him on her taxes. The Congressman told ABC7, "The IRS had been pointing fingers at the SSA and vice versa. But we just wanted to get to a solution, which was to make sure that Jaxen was listed as alive... Jaxen is an autistic child, and so that family has a lot of needs. Every dollar that is being denied based on this horrible falsehood means it's one less dollar that they can use to spend on their vital needs."
On Tuesday, Congressman Raja joined Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC in his role as a member of the House Intelligence Committee to discuss Russia's crackdown on press freedom and its detainment of American journalist, Evan Gershkovich. The Congressman told Andrea, "[Putin] is kidnapping Americans to use as bargaining chips in whatever negotiations that he is going to do...We should continue to put pressure on the regime and our friends and others who believe in journalism should do the same." The Congressman later added, "When people ask here, 'Why are we helping the people of Ukraine in their fight against Russia?,' ultimately they're fighting a war so we don't have to, and they're defending democracy, human rights, and the values we hold sacred. One of them is being able to freely criticize your government and to be able to speak your mind. Those are fast disappearing in Russia where speaking your mind and journalism is now a crime and we cannot tolerate that."
On Sunday, Congressman Raja joined Rep. Mike Gallagher on ABC News' This Week as top Democrat and Republican on the House China Committee to discuss their committee's simulation of a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan after China recently carried out live-fire drills around Taiwan. Overseen by the Center for a New American Security, the simulation gave members of Congress a sense of how a Taiwan conflict would unfold, and where U.S. weaknesses may lie. Lawmakers put politics aside to work across the aisle to walk through any potential challenges and identify the best legislative responses to deter and combat an invasion. Congressman Raja emphasized, "It's about preventing war games", telling host Martha Raddaatz, "I think you have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best."
