Dear Sandeep,
This week, Congressman Raja joined Lisa Dent on WGN Radio to discuss the tragic school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee that left 3 children and 3 adults dead. When asked what could be done to prevent future loss of life, the Congressman firmly said, "We need to put in place a ban on assault weapons. We need to be able to ensure that people don't have access to weapons that can kill so many people so fast, even at the same time that we respect the Second Amendment and people's rights to bear arms."
Recently, Congressman Raja appeared on WBBM Newsradio to discuss the security risks of TikTok and the future of the app. The Congressman said, "At the federal level, on a bipartisan basis, I believe that 100 percent of lawmakers actually voted for a ban on TikTok on federal devices. I, and a Republican named Mike Gallagher, have introduced the first legislation—the first bicameral and bipartisan legislation—that would require that ByteDance, the parent company, either sell the American operations to an American company or not to have TikTok in America. I suspect it will probably be sold. It's worth a lot, and so TikTok will not go dark, it will just be owned by a company that's not beholden to the Chinese Communist Party."
On Wednesday, Congressman Raja joined Joy Reid on The ReidOut to discuss the recent TikTok congressional hearing and the dangers that the app poses to national security. The Congressman told Joy, "I think we should have regulations that apply to all social media companies and we have to do a better job of doing that. In this particular case, I think the reason why we're so concerned is what's already happened...ByteDance actually used the platform to spy on American citizens and journalists." The Congressman went on to explain, "With regard to TikTok or other apps which are controlled by adversarial regimes, then you're starting to involve national security...the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, which controls the algorithm of TikTok, is routinely used to locate Uyghurs, to surveil them, and to persecute them, and we cannot endure that here."
We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
