Donald Trump just sat in the Oval Office and accused former President Barack Obama of treason. That accusation hits me personally, Sandeep. I got my very first role in Illinois politics working for President Obama on his first campaign for Senate. As another man from Illinois with a funny name, you have no idea what this time meant to me. To see someone who wasn't a cookie cutter politician on the campaign trail showed me what was possible. Frankly, that time with President Obama shaped who I am today. And it wasn't just the big rallies and speeches, it was moments when we could just sit at a kitchen table and talk.
It's from those moments — both big and small — that showed me the kind of man President Obama is. The kind of man who fights for the working class, stands up to bullies, and ensures our children get the best of everything possible. And that's exactly the kind of man I've tried to be throughout my political career, and the kind of man I'll be in the Senate. It was from that experience that I decided then I would spend my life working to improve the lives of families like mine and protect the benefits we depended on. It's also how I know that everything Donald Trump says about President Obama isn't based in reality. The only person guilty of anything is the man currently sitting in the White House with his 39 felonies. I don't like bullies, Sandeep. And Donald Trump and his MAGA cult all fit the bill and if we're going to defeat every last one of them, then we've got to work together.
