Raja Update 7/10

Dear Sandeep,

Last Monday, Raja visited a downtown Chicago Planned Parenthood to warn of the significant repercussions the "Large Lousy Law" would have on access to reproductive healthcare in Illinois, as covered by ABC7 Chicago. He said, "Everyone should have access to reproductive health care, and no member of Congress or elected official should get in the way between a health care provider and a woman and how she chooses to conduct her health care decisions."

On Tuesday, Raja kicked off his "Summer Listening Tour," in the Quad Cities for a meet and greet with Mayor Sangeetha Rayapati and former Congressman Phil Hare at the Atlas Collective coffee shop in Moline, IL. He said, "I announced my candidacy to preserve the American Dream for everybody…I don't care if you're working poor, middle class, I don't care if you're Kara (Taghon, owner of The Atlas Collective,) growing your own business. We've got to make sure that that American Dream is there for everybody."

Later on Tuesday, Raja hosted a virtual town hall meeting as he drove 14 hours from Moline to DC to vote against the "Large Lousy Law" after his flight was canceled. As Politico covered, he said, "We got some gas money, we got some snacks, and away we go… My GPS says I'm going to be there just in time." In a post on X, Raja said "I've been honored to represent Illinois for a decade in Congress – and this is the first time I have ever driven through the night to cast my vote. That's how important this is."

On Wednesday, Raja joined WGN Radio to discuss voting against Trump's Large Lousy Law and the ripple effect its passage would have on not just Medicaid, but also education, housing, and SNAP benefits in Illinois. He said, "The CBO said that 17 million people are going to be left without health insurance because of this particular bill…those are able-bodied adults, already,  the vast majority of them, are working while on Medicaid…Now, what this particular bill does, Republicans call them 'work' requirements, but really what they are are paperwork requirements; they are administrative hurdles that I believe are cynically designed to make it harder for people who would otherwise be eligible for the benefits."

On Thursday, Raja joined The Weeknight on MSNBC to discuss how he plans to hold Republicans accountable for forcing through the budget bill that would hurt tens of millions of Americans. He said, "I think that we should absolutely run on, in part, an agenda of restoring these cuts…This is a total loser for various reasons and we have to make sure that everyone understands why and the harm, the devastation that's going to be inflicted on working families and all families. It would be malpractice not to do so."

On Friday, Raja marched in the Hyde Park Parade for the 4th of July alongside his family and supporters.

On Saturday, Raja joined MSNBC to discuss the passage of the Large Lousy Law and the negative effects it will have on millions of Americans simply trying to access affordable healthcare and feed their families. He said, "At least 700,000 to a million people are losing their health insurance, hundreds of thousands losing their SNAP and food stamp assistance. That's personal to me. I'm a child of food stamps and public housing."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
