Raja Update 12/22

Dear Sandeep,

Happy Holidays!

Last week, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 134 announced its endorsement of Raja for U.S. Senate. Their endorsement follows the announcement of Teamsters Joint Council 25's support last month and adds to a rapidly expanding coalition of a dozen Illinois labor unions supporting Raja. "I have known Raja for years, and I know that he doesn't just talk about standing with labor — he shows up, he listens, and he consistently goes to bat to deliver real results for working people," said Donald Finn, Business Manager and Financial Secretary of IBEW Local 134. "Just last month at the candidate forum hosted by the Illinois AFL-CIO and the Chicago Federation of Labor, he demonstrated clearly that he understands the challenges our members face better than anyone. He's the fighter we need in Washington right now, which is why Local 134 is proud to stand with him as we continue the fight to protect working families and strengthen unions across Illinois."

On Monday, Raja penned an op-ed for Bloomington's The Pantagraph, about the unique economic challenges facing Central Illinois communities — and how his Plan to Restore the American Dream and Make Life More Affordable tackles those challenges head-on. "For generations, family farmers have been the backbone of Illinois, growing the soybeans and corn that feed the world. But now, Trump's reckless trade war has pushed them into a financial crisis by wiping out profits, shrinking markets and leaving too many farmers wondering if they can survive another season," writes Raja in his op-ed. "My plan gives family farms the tools they need to survive these shocks and compete with Big Ag, including new low-interest loans and more affordable insurance options that help them weather unpredictable markets. And I'll fight to protect our agricultural workforce from arbitrary immigration raids and federal mismanagement that have left farms understaffed, crops at risk, and food prices climbing."

On Tuesday, Raja joined CNN's Jim Sciutto on CNN International to discuss the Trump Administration's boat strikes in the Pacific Ocean. "In a situation such as this, where it appears that we are laying the groundwork for a war against Venezuela, you need to come to Congress," said Raja. "You need to get the consent of the American people – and that's where the War Powers act came from. Remember, after Vietnam, after all the secret wars, the American people said 'This is our prerogative to declare war'."

On Thursday, a coalition of over a dozen Southern Illinois elected officials and community leaders announced their united endorsement of Raja for U.S. Senate. "I am deeply honored to have earned the support of so many local leaders who understand what it takes to serve and uplift their communities," said Raja. "As a son of downstate, I know firsthand what Southern Illinois families are up against, and I am ready to be their voice in the U.S. Senate. I look forward to partnering with these leaders to deliver real results for families in every corner of our state."

On Friday, following a federal court ruling blocking the Trump administration's restrictions on congressional access to immigration detention facilities, Raja conducted an oversight visit at the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility after months of being unlawfully denied entry. "For months, the Trump Administration blocked lawful congressional oversight into conditions inside immigration detention facilities, including here in Broadview, while carrying out increasingly militarized immigration raids that sow fear in our communities," said Raja. "Congress has both the legal authority and the obligation to conduct real-time oversight. My visit follows a clear court ruling reaffirming that authority, and I will continue using every tool available to force the Trump Administration to follow the law, respect due process, and treat people in custody with dignity the American people demand."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
