I grew up in Peoria, Illinois.
It's not a coastal city or a tech hub. It's not the kind of place that shows up in conversations about the economy of the future. Just a midwestern town where working families built good lives — and where too many of those families today are watching the opportunities their parents had disappear without anything replacing them.
That's not a Peoria problem – that's an American problem.
Right now, where you live — your zip code — plays too large a role in determining what kind of future you can build. If you're in the right city, near the right industries, with access to the right schools and training programs, the 21st century economy has a place for you. If you're not — if you're in a small town, an urban area, a rural community, a neighborhood that the market has decided isn't worth investing in — you're on your own.
That is not acceptable. And it is not inevitable.
That's why I founded Equal Opportunity Now, to elect real leaders who will work to make sure EVERY American has a shot at the American Dream. Click here to rush a donation, then keep reading!
Your zip code should not determine whether you have access to in-demand jobs that pay good wages and provide real security for your family. It should not determine whether you can learn the skills the modern economy actually needs. It should not determine whether your community gets to participate in the growth and innovation that is reshaping our world.
We need to invest in career and technical education, in apprenticeships, in the kinds of training programs that meet people where they are and give them a real path forward. We need to bring business development to every part of this country — not just the coasts, not just the cities — and make sure that when those investments come, the people who already live there are the ones who benefit.
This is core to what Equal Opportunity Now is fighting for. Because expanding opportunity doesn't just mean tearing down barriers. It means building something in their place.
Will you chip in $5 or $10 today to help us elect leaders who will fight to make sure every American — regardless of their zip code — has a real shot at the future?
