Raja Update 1/31

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, Congressman Krishnamoorthi spoke about the 127,000 Russian troops menacing Ukraine's border. The Congressman said, "I'm against any Russian incursion, aggression or invasion — however minor or major — on the borders of Ukraine. We are against any Russian attempt to subvert Ukraine's right to self determination, and we are against any attempt to overthrow the government of Ukraine." Congressman Krishnamoorthi is also advocating for legislation directed at Russia that he described as "the mother of all sanctions bills in Congress."

The Washington Post highlighted the Congressman's leadership among Democrats calling for significant additional funding for global vaccination delivery and public health infrastructure to immunize vast swaths of the developing world. Congressman Krishnamoorthi said, "The assignment is incomplete... We need to make this investment going forward, and we need to do it ASAP." He added that "we need somebody whose mission 24/7 is to help get the rest of the world vaccinated... the consequences are enormous. We found out — painfully — how quickly a variant can come over here from abroad and totally overwhelm our system."

The Congressman also joined WBEZ radio to reiterate the concern he expressed in a letter to U.S. Olympic officials urging technology training for American athletes attending the Chinese winter Olympics. In a bipartisan letter, Congressman Krishnamoorthi said that China's restrictions on free speech and the internet for their own citizens should make the U.S. leery about our athletes attending the Olympic games without taking sufficient precautions to guard their electronic data. The Congressman told WBEZ reporters that, "These are superstars in their respective sports, and I think that they are the types of social influencers and others that the Chinese Community Party would definitely be interested in."

As part of his work as Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight subcommittee on economic and consumer policy, Congressman Krishnamoorthi sent a letter this week to major U.S. meat processing companies, seeking answers about skyrocketing meat prices, and whether these companies have engaged in predatory pricing practices. The Congressman said, "While some companies may claim that the high prices feeding [their] outsized profits are explained by higher input costs, earnings data [showing soaring net profits after costs] tell a different story." The Congressman made his suspicion clear by adding, "I am deeply concerned that meat processing conglomerates may have engaged in predatory business practices, at the expense of consumers, during the pandemic."

The Chicago Maroon reported on the Congressman's appearance at the "Protecting American Democracy" speaker event, hosted by David Axelrod and the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics over zoom. The Congressman, along with former deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe and University of Chicago political science professor Robert Pape, reflected on the January 6th insurrection and the 2,000+ individuals who violently breached the Capitol. Congressman Krishnamoorthi told participants, "We're still dealing with the scars of that day, and there are a lot of unanswered questions including why it took hours upon hours for the DC National Guard to arrive to put down the insurrection... We are also wondering why so many of those 2,000 people have not been charged and arrested and are sort of roaming free at this point."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
