The Congressman joined hosts on WGN Radio to provide an update on the ongoing situation in Ukraine as part of his work on the House Intelligence Committee. When asked to characterize the situation, Congressman Krishnamoorthi told listeners that "This [invasion by Russia] is a premeditated, savage, unprovoked attack on a sovereign, peaceful country. What I'm hearing from everyone I talk to is we have to stand with the Ukrainians. We have to make sure they have what it takes to repel this assault. What we've learned from history is that ruthless authoritarian dictators like Putin don't just stop at one country's borders, they go on and on, and so we have to make sure we stand with the Ukrainians."
Congressman Krishnamoorthi also appeared on WGNTV to discuss the conflict in Ukraine. When asked why Putin is so focused on Ukraine, the Congressman explained that, "Part of it is emotional, he has almost a maniacal obsession with Ukraine. He has written a very long essay, a 5000 word essay, about how he believes Ukraine is actually a part of Russia. The reason why we should care is any time an authoritarian dictator in Europe tries to redraw the border of any sovereign country -- it ends up being a bad thing, especially for its neighbors but also for the United States... we need to come to the aid of the Ukrainians and others in the neighborhood."
The Congressman also contributed an op-ed to 'The Hill' this week, titled "Showing the disaffected that democracy still works." In this piece, Congressman Krishnamoorthi identifies and explains three prevalent groups in American society: the mainstream, the disaffected, and the violent extremists. After outlining the contours of what makes each group unique, the Congressman related the solution to his own work, explaining that, "We must restore trust in our democratic institutions for our social contract to work. It can be done. A good example is the bipartisan infrastructure bill passed last year, proving that important work on behalf of our country's future can still be accomplished in Congress. The benefits of this legislation will accrue to every state across America, employing millions of workers and strengthening our ability to compete in the world. After all, there is no Democratic or Republican bridge or transit system. These public facilities and services belong to — and benefit — us all."
