When my family moved here from India, I was just a baby. Early on, we struggled. Public housing and food stamps were there when we got knocked down. My parents were chasing the American Dream in Peoria, Illinois — a place where we stood out in almost every way. I was the kid with 29 letters in his name, trying to figure out where I fit in.
But here’s the thing: Peoria embraced us anyway.And when my parents hit hard times — despite working constantly — the community was there. Public schools gave me an education. The money I saved working at McDonald’s, combined with grants and loans, got me through college and law school. My parents used to tell me: “Think of the greatness of this country. Whatever you do, make sure this country is there for the next families who need it.”
That’s my why. That’s why I became a Congressman. And it’s why I’m now running for the United States Senate.Because Donald Trump is systematically dismantling every single thing that made my story possible. He’s going after immigrants. Devastating SNAP and public housing. Attacking our schools and universities. The ladder I climbed? He’s pulling it up behind him. I refuse to let that happen.
