Dear Sandeep,
Last Monday, Teamsters Joint Council 25 announced its endorsement of Raja in the Chicago Tribune, joining an extensive coalition of unions and organized labor leaders who have backed his U.S. Senate bid. The undeniable labor candidate in the primary, Raja now has earned the support of ten Illinois labor organizations. Teamsters Joint Council 25 is one of the largest and most influential labor organizations in the region, representing more than 100,000 workers across Illinois and Northwest Indiana. "Raja has always been the kind of leader who listens first and fights hard, and that's why workers across Illinois trust him," said Thomas W. Stiede, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25. "He's stood with our members on picket lines, he's gone after powerful corporations that shortchange workers, and he's championed labor at every step."
Later that day, Raja sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem raising "serious concerns regarding recent reporting about lapses in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) hiring and vetting processes," concerns made "even more urgent by the arrest of an ICE agent in Bloomington, Minnesota, during a multi-agency sting targeting individuals attempting to solicit a minor at the Mall of America." In the letter, Raja wrote that although "public information about the individual's background remains incomplete," the nature of the allegations "heightens longstanding questions about ICE's capacity to ensure that its personnel meet the agency's own requirements."
On Wednesday, Raja joined Jonathan Capehart on MSNOW's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell to discuss Republicans' refusal to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies. When asked where he thought Republicans will go from here, Raja responded "I think they have to decide, do they side with their constituents who want these Obamacare tax credits extended, or do they side with a very hardline faction of the Republican conference that wants to kill Obamacare. They've always wanted to kill Obamacare, they tried to repeal it 50 times in Trump's first term when I was there a decade ago. Meanwhile, if those Obamacare tax credits don't get extended, 4 million people are going to lose their health insurance – that's on top of the 13 million who are going to lose health insurance because of what Trump calls the 'big, beautiful bill', I call it the 'large, lousy law'. It's really going to cause a health care catastrophe, and it's going to hurt all of us."
On Sunday, Raja's op-ed titled 'What Trump Gets Wrong About China; Only a Long-Term Strategy Can Counter the Threat From Beijing' was featured in Foreign Affairs' weekend edition. In his 2,000-word piece, Raja explains in detail how President Trump's approach to the Chinese Communist Party harms U.S. economic and security interests, and presents an alternative strategy that places the United States in a much more powerful and competitive position. "If the United States is serious about besting the CCP, it must start focusing on how to prevail in a long-term competition for both the future of the international system and for its own well-being," wrote Raja. "That means it needs to invest in its manufacturing capacity, spend on its people, shore up its partnerships, and reinvest in its values. Above all else, it needs to understand what winning the competition actually looks like. The United States will have prevailed against China not when the two countries have no trade imbalance, but when Washington and its allies are so prosperous and strong that they are impervious to the CCP's military threats, economic coercion, and malign activity."
We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
