Raja Update 3.15.21

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke with Connected to Chicago on Friday about the new Covid stimulus package, signed into law this last week by President Biden. In response to Republican criticism about the price tag, the Congressman argued, "I defer to Chairman Jay Powell, of the Federal Reserve, who basically said … the risks of doing too little outweigh the risks of doing too much, and I think in this particular case, my constituents are hurting tremendously."

Earlier in the week, the Congressman also spoke with WGN America about the impact of the state and local aid included in the new stimulus package. "I have Republican mayors in my own district who have called me, texted me, emailed me, saying our sales tax revenues have declined, our convention business has dried up, we need help to make sure that we avoid further service cuts or tax hikes." In response to the criticism that this money is somehow a blue state bailout, Congressman Raja responded, "that's nonsense, the six states with the highest tax revenue declines include FL, TX, ND, and AK, all of whom will benefit."

The Congressman was also joined by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker on WBEZ to talk about the state and local aid provisions. "It's essential for making sure that state and local governments don't have to engage in tax hikes or service cuts. 1.4m workers have already been laid off, including first responders, who are essential for fighting the Coronavirus, and what this aid does is it helps them to fight the Coronavirus and help save the economies of all our states."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi also wrote an impassioned op-ed in The Hill last week, sounding the alarm about the threat of domestic extremism in this country. "We should have known it could come to this … As a nation, we need to grapple with the reality that domestic extremists, who were radicalized online, live among us as our neighbors, co-workers, and even family and friends. Collectively, we need to open our eyes to the warning signs that we have ignored for so long."

Congressman Raja was also featured on WBEZ last week as part of his ongoing efforts to limit the presence of toxic heavy metals in baby foods, following the bombshell findings of a congressional oversight investigation led by the Congressman. "We thought that baby food makers would never sell anything that's unsafe for babies, and … we always assumed that the FDA would never allow baby food makers to sell unsafe food. Unfortunately, neither of those assumptions are true based on our investigation."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
