Raja Update 3.8.21

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

In the wake of Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's investigation into the presence of toxic heavy metals in baby food, as reported by CNBC, Congressman Raja has co-authored a new bill that would place strict limits on these hazardous elements. "Through our legislation and FDA regulatory action, we will ensure that the baby foods that reach the market are safe and that our children are safe." The FDA responded with a public statement on Friday, CNN reported, indicating that the agency will take actions to reduce the levels of heavy metals in baby food. Congressman Krishnamoorthi called it a "welcome change," but the Congressman expressed disappointment that the FDA "failed to commit to establishing concrete rules to remove toxic heavy metals from all baby foods" and reaffirmed "the need for Congress to pass legislation with strict standards and timelines."

Earlier in the week, Congressman Krishnamoorthi also spoke with Yahoo Finance about a new piece of legislation, co-sponsored by Congressman Krishnamoorthi, that would bar members of Congress from trading stocks, bonds, and options while they are members of Congress. "A lot of members of Congress are still buying and selling individual stocks, and if it isn't a reality, there's a very strong appearance of basically trading based on non-public information that they gained from their investigations, their hearings and their private briefings, which aren't available to the public."

Congressman Raja also introduced a bill this week to erect a monument in the Capitol or on the Capitol grounds honoring the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Congressman told WTEX, "When I look at my daughter, or my wife, or my mother, I can't help but think that Justice Ginsberg made it possible so that all of them and everyone could dream big dreams in this country."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
