Raja Update 3.23.21

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke with CNN on Saturday about the racially motivated killings of 8 people in the Atlanta area last week. "He knew what he was doing by going after these particular people, and it was because they were of Asian descent. The second thing is in the medium and long term, we have to pass legislation, such as my own bipartisan Hate Crimes Commission bill, to finally study at the federal government level the rise of hate crimes toward various minorities, including Asian Americans, and what we do to combat it."

The Congressman also spoke further with WGN radio about his Hate Crimes Commission bill: "I and others have put forward a bipartisan Hate Crimes Commission bill that would comprise 12 people designated by Congress -- not currently serving in Congress, 6 Democrats, 6 Republicans -- to investigate and report back in one year what needs to be done about hate crimes to reduce their incidence, and it's actually gaining some momentum … No such effort has been undertaken by the government at all, and that's partly what has led to what we see right now."

Earlier in the week, Congressman Krishnamoorthi spoke with MSNBC about public approval for the new Covid-19 stimulus package. "My constituents have expressed, on the whole, satisfaction with the plan. I just got a nice letter from the local firefighters who basically said that, thanks to this aid, a fire engine that would have otherwise been put out of service because of service cuts and tax revenue declines is now being put back into service, so they can do their jobs, and we don't have to cut public services or have tax hikes."

Congressman Raja also spoke with Fox32 Chicago about the details of the American Rescue Plan. "It's a huge win for the American people -- there are multiple reasons; obviously, there are stimulus checks at $1400 per person for most American families, there's aid for struggling businesses, including new grant programs for restaurants, which is an industry that's been decimated. There's an extension of employment insurance, which is going to expire on Sunday for 11 million Americans. There's aid for vaccines and testing and schools reopening, and of course, there's state and local aid, which I helped to spearhead in the Oversight Committee, where it originated."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
