Raja Update 3.29.21

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi introduced critical legislation last week to limit the presence of toxic heavy metals in baby food. As reported by The Hill, the Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 would require the FDA to oversee and set maximum levels of inorganic arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury in baby food, which are not currently regulated by the FDA. CNN reports that the impacts of toxic heavy metals on babies' developing brains can range from behavioral problems to aggression to IQ loss and all kinds of cognitive and behavioral deficits that can persist throughout life.

Congressman Raja spoke with Fox32 Chicago about his investigation into this issue and the new legislation introduced last week. "There are at least 4 sources [of heavy metals] that are man made that we can control: one is pesticides, another is fertilizers, a third is additives, and the fourth is industrial contamination of water and soil." In addition to setting maximum levels for heavy metals in baby food, The Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 would also authorize $50 million in federal funding for research into agricultural methods for reducing heavy metals in crops.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi also announced new legislation to bar Trump's Postmaster General Louis DeJoy from enacting his 10-year plan to gut USPS service standards. As reported in The Hill, DeJoy's plan would raise postage prices, reduce post office hours, and slow down mail delivery times. The aptly named DEJOY Act would prevent Louis Dejoy from lengthening delivery windows and require the USPS to meet the current mail standards. As Congressman Raja told CBS news, "Sending a piece of mail should not be a game of chance, and that's what's happening with the USPS, unfortunately, right now."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
