Sandeep,
Today's Juneteenth federal holiday commemorates the freeing of the last enslaved peoples of the United States. Yesterday, in 1865, hundreds of thousands of African-Americans were freed by Union troops re-establishing federal control in Texas, ending the last remnants of legal slavery in the country. This anniversary of emancipation has been celebrated ever since.
We can use this federal holiday as a reminder of where we as a nation have come from, what we have accomplished, but what we still need to overcome. Even as we recognize progress, let us have the hard conversations and listen to those who are calling out the scourge of racism too many still face in their daily lives. We can overcome our differences through open communication and meaningful dialogue about the problems we each face.
Let's enjoy the holiday, but take a moment to remember why it exists, and what progress we still need to make as a nation.
Warmest regards,
Raja
