Raja Update 9/19

Dear Friend,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, Congressman Raja received an "F" rating from the NRA, while his opponent was given an "A." "As a lifelong advocate for sane gun laws that would help protect our families and communities from gun violence, I was proud to receive a grade of 'F' from the NRA. I wear that grade as a badge of honor." The Congressman called on his opponent to release the NRA questionnaire responses that earned him his "A" rating. He has since refused to do so. "The voters of the 8th District, many of whom are still grappling with the devastating impact of the Highland Park massacre in our neighboring community, deserve to know as much as the NRA does about how you would represent them on critical issues surrounding gun policies and gun violence."

On Friday, Congressman Raja appeared on WGN Radio with John Williams to discuss the bill he authored that would ban members of Congress from trading individual stocks. He explained to John, "Unfortunately, what we know is that members of Congress have access to information that no one else in the public has...we have knowledge that if it's used to make trades, it would be called insider trading in any other industry. We have to ban this possibility of insider trading in our line of business to restore a little bit of trust back in Congress."

Recently, Congressman Raja helped lead a bipartisan group of representatives in writing to leaders of both parties, urging them to bring a bill to the floor for a vote by the end of the month that bans members of Congress from buying individual stocks. The Congressman told The Washington Post that he and his wife sold "all of our individual securities" after he was elected to avoid being "caught in a situation where I'd have to be voting on something that would affect the value of those securities." He emphasized, "I started to see exactly what happens when you don't do that and people are trading left and right and then they're either intentionally or unintentionally forgetting to follow disclosure rules. It creates a tremendous erosion of trust in the institution."

We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's work in D.C. and Illinois.
