Raja Update 2/20

Dear Sandeep,

Happy Presidents' Day! We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, Congressman Raja joined Wolf Blitzer on CNN to discuss the unidentified flying objects the U.S. military shot down the weekend prior. When asked about the nature of the objects, the Congressman told Wolf, "There are a lot of researchers and private companies that have drone capabilities at the 20,000 to 40,000 feet altitude range, and so we don't know if any of those objects potentially could have been research drones. All that being said, I would go back to what General VanHerck from NORAD said the other day, which is we still have some domain awareness challenges. There appear to be some holes in our radar systems and our sensors that may allow for certain objects to slip through and we've got to patch those."

Congressman Raja also joined Kate Bolduan on CNN to further discuss the unidentified flying objects that entered American airspace. The Congressman told Kate, "One thing's for sure: the CCP surveillance balloon was different in kind from the other UAPs that we saw over the weekend, and [the CCP balloon] was clearly a threat to our national security...I think the Administration is looking at the wreckage now to assess what was collected and the intelligence capabilities of the CCP. The next step is obviously taking countermeasures to prevent this from happening again."

Recently, Congressman Raja joined Scott Wong on NBC News to discuss the importance of prioritizing bipartisanship on the select committee on China and finding areas of common ground. Those areas include uncovering human rights abuses by the CCP, forming a strategy to reduce U.S. dependence on China, and making investments in new technology to compete with China. Speaking of Rep. Mike Gallagher, the top Republican on the panel, Congressman Raja told Scott, "We formed the Middle Class Jobs Caucus together in our first year in Congress. And so we've done a lot of work together in the past...We know each other pretty well, we get along, and I think that will help with having collaboration going forward."

We will continue to bring you news about Raja's work in D.C. and Illinois.
