Raja Update 2/27

Dear Sandeep,

We hope all is well with you and your family, and that you are safe and healthy.

This week, Congressman Raja joined Congressman Mike Gallagher on CBS's Face the Nation to discuss combating threats from the Chinese Communist Party in their respective roles as top Democrat and top Republican on the House Select Committee on China. Congressman Raja told host Margaret Brennan, "The CCP likes nothing better than to have divisions between Democrats and Republicans...we have to get over that to be effective." The Congressman also emphasized, "Just at the same time that we are very concerned about the CCP going after Chinese origin people here [in the U.S.], we have to make sure that in our conversations we don't engage in any stereotyping or questioning people's loyalty...I want to hear Republicans also echo that sentiment, because we have to make sure in our conversations on the committee we stay out of xenophobia and we make sure we keep the focus on the Chinese Communist Party."

On Wednesday, Congressman Raja also joined Lisa Dent on WGN Radio to discuss an upcoming vote by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board that would allow a merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern railroads. The Congressman told Lisa, "The Surface Transportation Board should take into account what has happened in Ohio with regard to this merger", referring to the derailment of a train carrying toxic chemicals in East Palestine, Ohio earlier this month. Congressman Raja added, "The proposed merger would cause almost 11,000 additional carloads of hazardous materials to be transported along the Milwaukee District West line, so now you know why we are so concerned about this merger...The railroads have been extremely powerful in Washington, D.C...and so it does feel a little like David and Goliath in some ways, but on the other hand, we have to fight, we have to make sure our voice is heard."

On Friday, Congressman Raja joined Nicole Wallace on MSNBC to discuss the U.S. adoption of a new intelligence playbook to expose Russia's war plans by publicly releasing previously classified information. In his role as a member of the House Intelligence Committee, the Congressman explained to Nicole, "It's been brilliant, it was very effective. It did three things: one, it helped to alert our Ukrainian friends to the threat that was impending at the time. Secondly, it helped to unite our allies and other interested parties in the region in backing the Ukranians. And third, it helped to wrongfoot the Russians; it got them thinking twice on what they were doing and getting them wondering what else do we know...The Administration has done an excellent job of keeping our methods of gathering intelligence secret while accomplishing those three goals."
