Dear Sandeep,
On Monday, Raja joined NPR's Mary Louise Kelly on All Things Considered to discuss President Donald Trump's threats to send the National Guard into Chicago. When asked how he believes the mere threat of deploying the National Guard impacts the city, Raja said, "I think it causes people to be anxious, I think people are scared and fearful. I think that we should file lawsuits preemptively to declare this type of action to be unconstitutional and get a temporary restraining order or preliminary injunction…And I think that he almost wants to provoke a spectacle and potentially violence, which would then justify further harsh measures on his part."
Later that afternoon, Raja joined CNN's Boris Sanchez on CNN News Central to further discuss President Donald Trump's plans to militarize Chicago. On Trump calling Chicago a "killing field, a disaster", Raja said, "Well obviously it's false, but we know he's trying to distract attention from his mismanagement of the economy, as well as the Epstein Files. I think there's a real problem that he finds with those particular issues, and he wants to try to change the channel, change the conversation."
On Tuesday, Raja released his third television ad, "29." In the new spot, Raja speaks directly to the pain many Illinoisans are feeling as a result of Donald Trump's cuts to healthcare and food assistance programs for working families – all to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. In the ad, Raja reiterates his commitment to fighting back and holding Trump accountable, highlighting his accountability plan he released earlier this month. In the ad, Raja says "That American Dream is slipping out of the grasp of millions of people. Trump has unleashed a huge set of tax cuts for the wealthiest, funded by cuts to the social safety net. I want an Illinois where everyone has a chance to succeed, regardless of the color of their skin or the number of letters in their name. There are 29 in mine."
Later that day, Raja introduced the Bringing Back Benefits Act, legislation that would repeal the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP passed in Trump's budget bill. Raja said, "The decision by President Trump and Congressional Republicans to slash Medicaid and SNAP to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest among us was a moral failure and a massive mistake. Families across Illinois and the nation are already feeling the devastating impacts of this so-called 'Large Lousy Law,' and we must act now to repeal these disastrous provisions before millions more are affected."
On Friday, Raja blasted Trump's plan to stage mass immigration raids in Chicago. Raja said, "President Trump's reported plan to stage mass immigration raids out of Naval Station Great Lakes is reckless and unacceptable. Using a U.S. Navy base as a detention and deportation hub for increasingly militarized operations risks sweeping up American citizens and legal permanent residents, as this administration has already done repeatedly. These tactics tear families apart while undermining constitutionally protected rights across our region."
We will continue to bring you news about Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's efforts to stand up to Trump and fight for Illinois.
